24-Hour Leaderboard Unofficial Results

Looks like we've got all the data in for the 24-Hour teams. Will circle back around with Toby to confirm, but looks like the closest competition was between 2nd place 51: Appalachian AR and 3rd place tie 77:Scarred for Life and 53:Team ROC Gear/4LPH4 1337, the latter two arriving at the finish line 30 minutes behind the former. With 2 hours remaining on the race clock, another CP would have boosted either of the latter 2 teams to 2nd place.

Team 55 Has Withdrawn

After moving to incomplete status earlier in the day due to Michael Beacham's dehydration, Sport Factory has decided to throw in the towel at CP15/TA2 (Bike Drop).

Awaiting Checkpoint Zero's Emerger

Checkpoint Zero is slated to emerge from the trek to CP15/TA any moment now. They've been in there for 3:45 now. It is a 7 mile trail hike, and they are currently averaging less than 2 miles an hour. All of the field is currently on this section, and apparently the trails will turn you around in there, because the 6- and 12-hour teams didn't do so hot either--and that was during the daytime!

Cutoffs have changed for a few teams.

For all but 3 of the 24 hour teams, the finish cutoff is 7:55am on Sunday.

But for the following teams, due to missing the canoe cutoff, their finish cutoff has slid back according to their time penalty:
  • 60: Checkpoint Zero - 7:46am
  • 51: Appalachian AR - 7:46am
  • 56: Mims the Word - 7:13am
Mims the Word actually landed a 1:12 penalty after getting out of the canoe drop at 4:37pm. However, they earned a 30 minute credit by assisting Team ROC Gear/4LPH4 1337 unravel their canoe from a big sharp rock in the river.

6-Hour and 12-Hour Boards Finalized

At least, Toby and I synced up and the 6- and 12-Hour boards should now be accurate. A gentle note about RDBoard leaderboard discrepancy with the official rankings:

...turn off your listening if you don't care about mundane technical details...

I thought it'd be a good idea to add CTA1 and CTA2 to the leaderboard to show the flow of the course a bit, since those are places most of the teams will be going through, we could capture times there, etc. But they aren't really CPs. And for that matter, neither are the start and finish on the leaderboard, not in reality, anyway. But RDBoard for the Goldrush is configured to rank based status, CP count, and time. In this case, it's counting the Start, CTA1, CTA2, and Finish as CPs. So the counts for RDBoard and the counts from the passports will differ by 1-4, depending on the team.

I'll fix this in the future so RDs can put waypoints/check stations that don't actually have any bearings on rank. There is a workaround currently in RDBoard (use the weighted CP ranking and weight S, CTA1, CTA2, and F as 0 points each), but should be a clean way to do it as well.

Scarred For Life, But Not Dead

Scarred for Life is in lock-step with Team ROC Gear/4LPh4 1337, proving that they are not out of this race just yet.

24-Hour Leaderboard Tells Nothing

The keeping up to date with the 24 hour crowd has proved a challenge. The format of the race has allowed for some "interesting" tactics, leading to less visibility in teams' progress. A couple of problems thusfar:
1. some teams decided to take canoes from canoe drop down before doing orienteering course, then putting in and going. Others did the entirety of the Orienteering course, then got the canoes. For the teams that took them down early, what CPs they got at the O-course after CP1 and CP2 was not known by race management. For the teams that got the canoes at the end, what they did and didn't get wasn't recorded. So, I fell back to CTA as the first audit point to get leaderboard information (what CPs teams have gotten or skipped).
2. Some teams chose to take-out the canoes, but not portage them into CTA. Instead, they continued on to the trekking portion directly. While legal, this means these teams have gone under the RDBoard radar once again. Who knows how many CPs they have?

What we do know:
1. CP0 is in the lead, having cleared the course thusfar, but is carrying an 8 minute penalty.
2. Appalachian AR seemed to be in their vicinity at the orienteering course (at least, they left it together--thus the 8 minute penalty they are carrying as well).
3. Team ROC Gear/4LPH4 1337 cleared the orienteering course, which means they probably have cleared the course so far.
4. Sport Factory are a man down, and so are unofficial, and ImONPoint/Odyssey AR are done.
5. Though the seemed to have sweated it out on the o-course, Mims the Word now wears the burden of a 1:08 penalty, and were the last to leave the o-course by a large margin.
6. Enthost seemed to be moving along. BOTR, Scarred for Life, who knows?

So I'm thinking these are the top 3 are:
1. Checkpoint Zero
2. & 3. Appalachian AR and Team ROC Gear/4LPH4 1337

If Appalachian AR did NOT clear the o-course, then Team ROC Gear/4LPH4 1337 is ahead. However, Team ROC Gear/4LPH4 1337's boat issues slowed their paddle down significantly, so Appalachian AR may have gained enough time on them to get allow for them to get more CPs down the road.

ImONPoint.org/Odyssey AR is OUT

One of the favored teams for the race, team 75 is out of the race. With a member still flagging from a recent bout of pneumonia, the team decided to throw in the towel after the east section of the course.

12-Hour Unofficial Results

Team Dusack was in long ago. Clerical error on my part. 12-Hour board is up-to-date. Only race tracking left is for 24-hour folks. And I'll have a couple of updates shortly.

24 Hour Course

Here's what the 24-hour teams are up against:

20 miles running
21 miles paddle
7 miles trekking
50 miles biking
7 miles trekking
------------------
105 miles total

On paper, looks achievable for some of the very best teams. However, combine that with the 105F day, and considering the biking is at night, it's gonna force the lead teams to decide what CPs they are going to have to skip. Given the penalty for going over the race cutoff (1 CP per every 10 minutes past race cutoff, starting at 1 minute past), time management and planning will be key.

72: Team Lost Cause IN.

However, they've only got 1CP to show for their 12 hours after penalties for coming in after the race cutoff.

Team Dusack remains the last team from the 12-hour folks.

They Are Paddling Which Way?

That's right, many teams paddled upstream on the Etowah to get to CP3, CP5, & CP6. The lower portion of the Etowah is generally pretty flat/calm water. That, combined with the lower water levels mentioned previously, and you probably have a sound strategy.

Water Levels Drastically Affecting Racers

Fastest team down the river today: 4.5 hours;
Slowest: 7 hours.
Vetting: 3 hours.

Water levels are much lower than they were, and have negatively affected race times today, cutting the most into the shorter races' competitors ability to make headway into some of the latter sections of the course. At the same time, teams choosing the west option of the course encountered some problems on there own. Progress with the trekking section to CP15/TA bike drop screeched to a halt as the heat and navigational problems kept the teams pursuing a western route at bay.

Methinks only the more experienced and hardened 24-hour crowd, armed with more time and resolve, will press on beyond the bike drop and into the Pine Log/Alatoona bike sections.

CP4 Under Scrutiny

With only 4 teams from 30 punching CP4, it is now under scrutiny for possibly being misplaced. Checkpoint Zero lodged the protest, Andy is going to confirm its location now.

12-Hour Leaderboard Almost Complete and Race Cutoff Penalties

Massive update for the 12-Hour folks.

What you see is pretty much the unofficial ranking, with the exception of two teams:
72: Lost Cause
52: Team Dusack

Will try to get them as soon as the teams turn up.

Speaking of turning up, 81: Tatonka from the 6-Hour course showed up. Unfortunately, they were so far past the race cutoff that they all the CPs they accrued were penalized into oblivion.

For the race cutoff, the penalties are as follows:
1 minute after cutoff: 1 CP penalty
11 minutes after cutoff: 2 CP penalty
21 minutes after cutoff: 3 CP penalty
...

12-Hour Race Cutoff in 1 Hour

Some teams are finishing, some are still out on the trek section (CP11-CP15), and some are still paddling in (CP7-CP10) to the CTA with the 24 hour teams.

Hol(e)y Canoe

Word on the water is that 53:Team ROC Gear/4LPH4 1337 has sprung a leak in their canoe. Sounds like they patched it and are continuing downstream.

8-Hour Race Unofficial Results

Well, the leaderboard is up-to-date for the 8-hour race. Two exceptions to note:
  1. There is a possibility that team 71:ROBO CAG actually withdrew at CP15/TA2. If so, they will be bumped down.
  2. No data currently on team 81:Tatonka. Race management believes that they withdrew mid-paddle, and got picked up. Confirming.

Missed Cutoff Penalty

For those teams that missed the canoe cutoff, a minute-for-minute penalty will be applied to their times. So for example, for CP0, who missed it by 9 minutes (checking out of the TA at 3:34 with cutoff of 3:25), a penalty of 9 additional minutes will be applied.

TA1 Closed Down

Mims the Word, armed with headlamps, has been permitted to continue the paddle. Faced with a penalty for missing the cutoff, they will soldier on, the last team leaving TA1.

Weather Advisory

From weather.com:

Cloudy
Temperature:
94°F
Feels Like: 105°
Details:
Dangerous heat index. Outdoor exposure should be limited.

CP0 and Appalachian AR Miss Cutoff

They have been allowed to proceed, but missed the paddle cutoff by 9 minutes. Not sure if they attempted to sweep the 1st leg and just couldn't get in in time or what.

Mims the Word showed up at the TA1 @4:15. The called in at 2:45, saying they were 20 minutes away. 1.5 hours later, they arrived to a canoe staged with paddles but no PFDs! Not sure what's gonna happen there.

Pine Log a Ghost Town

Thunderstorms are rolling in, and Pine Log area is a ghost town. No teams have visited it, and I don't think any will until later tonight as the 24 hour teams start to get through.

Michael Beacham's on the road home.

He's fine and on the way home now, recovered from the heat.

6 Hour Race Leaders

Coming up on the 8 hour race cutoff in 5 minutes or so. Per the leaderboard, Try Anything and Crash Test Dummies are winning and from the field they are traveling together. So we may have a tie for first if they get back in time.

The 3rd, 4th, and 5th place teams threw in the towel after 1 CP. It's a war of attrition out there, due to the heat.

Mr. T?

From Bike Drop/CP15:

Team 73:The A Team arrived TA2/CP 15 around 1220p. They missed no CPs up until that point, then climbed in awaiting vehicle and called it quits.
Wondering what kind of vehicle...

...ducks...

55: Sport Factory Incomplete

Michael Beacham is out, due to the heat. He withdrew at TA1, where an EMT is. They also have lots of drinks there, so only a matter of time til he's tip top again.

Sport Factory HOT

Michael Beecham is being checked out by the EMT for heat issues. Already the sun is taking its toll on the field.

Lost Keys

Folks at TA1 (Canoe Put-In) found a key to a Toyota. Any volunteers that were there, may be yours. Contact Toby.

Perhaps not all on the water

Turns out, many of the 8- and 12-hour teams that started at the Canoe drop on the east side were actually just portaging their canoes down to the water, not actually putting-in. Instead, they would then go out to do the orienteering section, so as to avoid having to come back in to the canoe drop and then back out afterward. Smart!

All 24 Hour Teams on Orienteering Course

Waypoint 3 isn't on leaderboard, but it is the closest point to the Orienteering course without actually being on the orienteering course. So they are all out there, bushwhacking and nav'ing it up.

Currently 95 degrees F, with 70% humidity in Canton, GA. Hope they brought enough water.

1st 24 Hour Team Arriving @ Canoe Drop

Who will it be??????

24 Hour Team Times @ Waypoint 2

9:42 - 60:Checkpoint Zero
9:45 - 51:Appalachian AR
9:48 - 53:Team ROC Gear/4LPH4 1337
9:55 - 55:Sport Factory
10:03 - 76:Enthost
10:06 - 56:Mims the Word
10:08 - 59:BOTR
10:15 - 75:ImONPoint-Odyssey AR

No info on 12/8 Hour folks until they arrive at CTA.

For the 8- and 12- hour folks that are tackling the orienteering/paddling first, they are all on the water. None of the 24 hour teams are on the water. Team 69 from the 12-hour race was the last to leave, but they hit up the orienteering course, while the report is that all the other 12-hour teams got into the canoes immediately. No real data from TA1 yet, but we'll start getting it in now that they know what to jot down.

Well, not immediately--there is a 1.5 mile canoe portage from the canoe drop to the put-in. Ouch. Hope they brought those portage wheels.

More over-sleepers...

Well, looks like PB&Gel decided not to get out of bed when they overslept the alarm... Guess We Only Have 6 Hours moved up a spot just by getting there.

East or West?

For the 8- and 12-hour course teams, they have to decide how to start--will they do the orienteering/paddling on the East side first, or the trekking/biking on the West side? Here is a list of teams that staged their canoes on the East Side (choosing east side):

All CPs on All Leaderboards

All the CPs are now posted on all the course leaderboards. I'm gonna now try to start getting info on which teams are where.

Through Way Point 2

All 24 Hour teams have passed through Waypoint 2. Waypoint 2 (not shown on leaderboard) is on the way to CP1. No doubt these 24-hour teams are running this first 10 mile road stretch.

The first 4 were:
Checkpoint Zero
Appalachian AR
Team ROC Gear/4LPH4 1337

Alarm Set for PM?

Team 58: We Only Have 6 Hours only have 5 hours. Apparently, they started at 9am. I had trouble with my alarm clock this morning as well...so I'm not throwing stones or anything; but they do have some work to do to make up that extra hour!

And they are off!

Official race start time was 7:55am. The canoe cutoff and race cutoff will be pushed back 25 minutes.

Additionally, the 8- and 12-hour teams were started at CP7 of the 24-Hour course.

I've heard that instead of attacking orienteering leg w/ CP1-CP7, many of the 8- and 12-hour teams have elected to just start paddling, no doubt to get to the bike portions of the course as soon as possible.

Teams Up, CPs Coming...

The races have started. I'll be added CPs to RDBoard.com within the next half hour.

Overzealous Photographer

Apparently someone (ahem Toby) got overzealous and posted a bunch of Gocart photos to RDBoard.com last night. Now we know it works. :)

Race Start Pushed Back

The official race start has been pushed back to 8am. Will investigate as to whether this pushes back the paddle cutoff and/or the race cutoff.
